Is Not Boring

There’s a buffalo skull where I live, where
Once used to be a sweatlodge.
Tucked behind its jaw is a bright
Red bundle, red
As the paint flaking off the skull.
It’s not good luck or bad; it hangs
From a nail on a tree and glows
In the dark & even in the sun
Like a ghost who won’t leave.
When I pass it I like
To visualize memories
To memorize visions of the future
On the way to the river
This remainder of buffalo
Bone like moon.
Hovering behind the big rock: leaves
In an eddy – pink, yellow, & green –
Circus colors tumbling their last
Shouts, moving at the pace of a dream.
It’s good to study the way the dead live. |
