Dear Mel,
Congratulations on your promotion to becoming DOL's mouthpiece!
You must forgive the continuing delusion the rest of us have
that FWP speaks and acts for the interests of WILDlife and HABITAT.
I don't understand why this release did not come from Dr. Rankin's
office. If you were merely passing on this news to those of
us on FWP's mailing list, you could have issued some provisos
or clarifications of the blatant mis-information that Mr. Harris
has put out.
1. Regarding Mr Harris' statement in paragraph two about transmission
of brucellosis from animals to humans, how about a footnote
notating when the last cases of this type of transmission occurred
in Montana? Maybe the authorities "can't remember"?
2. In that same paragraph, Mr. Harris states "brucellosis
can persist in the environment for some time under varying temperature
and light conditions" ... this is just begging for another
footnote from FWP's biologist Dr. Keith Aune whose research
has shown that persistence at this time of the year is approximately
18 days. But here we are a full 46 days before the May 15th
drop-dead date and major hazing is occurring.
3. The statement is deceptive in making this sound like this
is the first day of hazing, instead of admitting that this hazing,
including hazing off of PUBLIC (i.e. MY LAND) has been going
on almost daily for weeks now.
4. This quote from Mr. Harris' statement made me want to puke:
"The agencies intend to conduct these operations safely
and humanely without damage to property or persons in the area."
As I write this email to you hundreds of pregnant buffalo are
being hazed off Horse Butte and on Highway 287 in an unnecessary,
unsafe and certainly inhumane manner. As I've said before any
livestock grower treating their pregnant cattle and/or horses
in this manner would be in jail for "cruelty to animals."
Since most of you have not witnessed these "humane and
safe" actions first hand from your safe offices in Bozeman
and Helena you probably can't hear what the buffalo are saying
loudly and clearly:
MAY DAY! MAY DAY! ...
today i am filled with a renewed sense of despair ... longing
for footnotes and some sanity.
