LETTER:  Shame on anyone who doesn't oppose the buffalo 'hunt', Bozeman Daily Chronicle, 01/31/06

The government of the state of Montana, along with the National Park Service, and anyone who did not speak out against the buffalo "hunt" should feel absolutely ashamed of themselves at this point.

The latest person to come out to execute a buffalo at Horse Butte, shot at the buffalo three times from within 105 yards of a house. It moved wounded but not dead to private land, where it was illegally shot at a fourth time on land that no hunting is permitted and bled to death after the two-hour ordeal. The fourth shot was recklessly in the direction of a neighboring house. Another neighbor just phoned me to say she saw a hunter walk past her window, and then a Department of Livestock truck just drove past.

Is this the kind of behavior we residents of Horse Butte have to look forward to for the rest of this reckless execution-style buffalo hunt? This is not a hunt any respectable individual would take part in.

On Jan. 31, the agencies carrying out the Bison Management Plan, which also involves stealing bison calves from the Park and their families to put them in experimental quarantine facilities, will host an open house from 4-8 p.m. at the Hilton Garden Inn. Please come out and speak up for the buffalo.

Respectable hunts and treatment of wildlife would not have the Department of Livestock as the lead agency, and the animals would legally be allowed on hunting grounds. This is not the case with the bison. These bison need every person possible to speak up for them so they can get the respect they deserve, to be treated as equal to all the other endangered wildlife.

There is absolutely no honest reason why they should be treated any other way.
