Letter: Bison wrong target for DOL slaughter
Billings Gazette
6/03/07
What a bunch of hypocrites we have in this community!

The town of West Yellowstone is having its big unveiling of the statue bison this weekend. Bought and painted by mostly locals, and at the same time the Department of Livestock is constructing the capture facility at the airport. The capture facility is being rebuilt so that they can capture and haul to slaughter all bison that are not inside the park. This includes the new babies.

It is well known that the bison have not transmitted the brucellosis to cattle but the elk have and they (DOL) are still brutally molesting the bison. Why not put this effort into where it really needs it? Areas where the elk are intermingling.

I have personally asked why is brucellosis such an horrendous disease? If they abort a calf, they are then immune. More calves are lost to distemper, diphtheria, scours and more. They tell me that brucellosis-infected animals are safe to eat, milk needs to be pasteurized, meat cooked so what is the big scare? This is the 21st century, not the 1860s. No one can give me the answer.
The money (hundreds of thousands of dollars) that is wasted on these idiotic procedures could be better spent in fencing materials i.e. a 6-foot-tall chain link fence, that the Buffalo Field Campaign would be more than happy to construct, free of charge, around the cattle properties up here.
