This one of a kind gourd bowl was created by me, Melanie Kelley. When I started it I fully intended to create a piece that was simply to show off my talents. It was never my intention to try to sell it. I needed a showstopper in my booth. I needed a piece to enter into the many contests that occur in the art shows that I do. The kind of piece that folks would simply marvel at but never purchase. It did it's job very well and I won several awards with it. Now, it is time to put it to better use.... to help save our beloved Yellowstone buffalo.

The gourd was grown in southern Appalachia during the summer of 2004. In the spring of 2005 I purchased it from the grower at one of our local farmer's markets. If you are not familiar with gourds, they are simply an inedible seed pod which grow on vines. Historically, they were among the first tools used by man. Most folks recognize them as water dippers, rattles or martin houses. Similar to wood, gourds can last for thousands of years with simple care. They are fragile, but yet they are very sturdy.

All the detail work is done with pyrography (wood burning ) and is done one pain staking line at a time. It took me over 100 hours to create this piece. If I make a mistake, that is it! Once burned, those lines stay there, especially when they are burned deeply to create texture. The ginkgo leaves are all modeled after natural leaves that I have collected all over the US. The leaves are highlighted in shades of green and gold. The basket pattern is simply that, a pattern to create the effect of a woven basket. Over all it is just over ten inches wide and seven inches high. The colors are more subdued than what is shown in this professional photo.
Over time, the gourd will develop a patina and some of the colors will change. That will only enhance it's beauty.
