Horse Butte is an incredibly beautiful peninsula 5 miles west of Yellowstone National Park. (Map) For countless generations, the Yellowstone buffalo herd has migrated to Horse Butte via a winter/spring migration corridor. The buffalo winter there at this lower elevation and calve on the protected peninsula in the spring. Learn more about Horse Butte and the Horse Butte Wildlands Protection Project.

Often other wildlife are victims of hazing operations causing them undue stress. In this clip a moose and buffalo are running for their lives. The sound of the helicopter is overwhelming. The hazing operation causes a buffalo to run into a fence.

The open water near Horse Butte where the Madison River meets Hebgen Lake is critical wintering habitat for the Trumpeter Swan. Swans winter here from as far away as Nahanni National Park in the Northwest Territories, Canada. BFC Volunteers participate in the West Yellowstone Area Audubon Christmas Bird Count. The Swan count for the area January 2004 was 529.

As of Fall 2006 Hebgen Lake is recognized by Audubon as an Important Bird Area

The Swans are disrupted during the bison hazing operations by the Montana Department of Livestock. The helicopter hazing sends the Swans aflight wasting critical winter energy. In this video see 100's of Swan taken aflight during a Montana Department of Livestock hazing operation.
Elk Migration

Yellowstone National Park is home to over 100,000 Elk. Like the Bison, Elk migrate to lower elevations to milder winter habitat. This amature video taken near West Yellowstone shows thousands of Elk in migration. The Elk carry brucellosis too. What about the elk infected with brucellosis? Elk hunting is a tremendous source of revenue for the State of Montana and there would be tremendous public outry from outfitters and the hunting public if there were a slaughter of the elk. Slaughtering the buffalo makes no sense when there is always the risk of reinfection from the elk. The real issue is the competition between buffalo and cattle foraging on public-lands. The livestock industry has no interest in sharing these public lands with America's largest free-ranging herd of buffalo.
