| Rehberg
sees brucellosis as wildlife crisis
Associated Press, Billings Gazette

Rep.
Denny Rehberg, R-Mont., says brucellosis among bison and
elk in the Yellowstone National Park area has become a
"wildlife health crisis," and the Interior Department
must remain diligent in addressing the situation.
"If the problem of brucellosis continues to worsen,
there could be a devastating financial and environmental
impact on the area," Rehberg wrote Interior Secretary
Gale Norton this week.
Norton was in Yellowstone last week. During her guided
snowmobile travels, she paused to watch bison and asked
questions about them. Given Norton's trip, Rehberg considered
it important to emphasize that "we need to continue
to pursue the war against brucellosis in and around the
park," Rehberg spokesman Brad Keena said Wednesday.
Brucellosis can cause cows to abort, and ranchers worry
bison could transmit brucellosis to cattle. Rehberg said
he wanted to encourage the Interior Department to continue
working on the brucellosis issue.
The National Park Service, an agency within the department,
is involved in a state-federal bison management plan.
Stephany Seay of the Buffalo Field Campaign, which has
criticized government bison-control work, said Rehberg's
comments were a "huge overexaggeration."
