WEST
YELLOWSTONE - At least 13 bison from Yellowstone
National Park have died on U.S. 191 this winter, including
six killed over the weekend when a semitrailer smashed
into a herd near here, a spokesman for the Buffalo Field
Campaign said.
Dan Brister, spokesman for the protest group headquartered
near West Yellowstone, said Monday his group puts up signs
and posts volunteers along the roadway to warn drivers
when bison are on the highway.
But everybody had gone home by the time the accident occurred
Saturday night near the Cougar Creek drainage, seven miles
north of West Yellowstone, he said.
State officials also have posted temporary signs on the
shoulder of the road warning drivers that animals may
wander onto the two-lane highway.
Brister said his group is working with state highway officials
to put up more effective signs warning of bison on the
highway.
