BILLINGS,
Mont. (AP) - A bull bison was captured Monday
near the western border of Yellowstone National Park and
will be sent to slaughter, state officials said.
The bison had been hazed repeatedly from private property
back into the park. It will be tested for brucellosis
before being killed, said Karen Cooper, a spokeswoman
for the Montana Department of Livestock.
About 110 bison have been hazed back into Yellowstone
by state and federal agents over the past two months,
she said. Another bull bison was sent to slaughter Oct.
19.
The capture and testing of bison from Yellowstone occurs
under a joint state and federal management plan to reduce
the risk of transmitting brucellosis from bison to cattle
in Montana. Brucellosis is a disease that can cause cows
to abort.
