Wandering park bison caught, will be killed
Gazette Staff, Billings Gazette
Novmeber 30, 2004
A bull bison that wandered out of Yellowstone National Park was captured Monday and will be sent to slaughter.

The bison, which had been repeatedly hazed, was captured outside Yellowstone's western border in the Upper Bear Trap area.
Karen Cooper, a spokeswoman for the Montana Department of Livestock, said the operation is part of an ongoing state and federal plan to deal with bison that leave the park. The plan, signed in 2000, is intended to keep bison away from cattle and reduce the risk of spreading brucellosis, a contagious disease that can cause cattle to abort.

The bison captured Monday was the subject of complaints for wandering onto private property, Cooper said.It will be tested for exposure to brucellosis before it's killed, Cooper said.
Over the past two months, 110 bison have been hazed back into Yellowstone by state and federal agents, Cooper said. Another bull bison was captured and sent to slaughter on Oct. 19.
The Buffalo Field Campaign, a group that advocates allowing bison to leave the park, has emphasized that there has not been a documented case of a wild bison transmitting brucellosis to cattle.

In a statement Monday, the group said that some local residents met with government officials last week to say they wanted the bison to remain in their neighborhood and that they opposed hazing and slaughter operations."The war against the buffalo is unjustified and not supported by area residents," said Mike Mease of the Buffalo Field Campaign.

After the bison is killed, its head, meat and hide will be donated to a tribal group.
