Stop
bison hunt
The proposed solution to Montana's ongoing problem with
the bison herds, as authorized by the legislature and
condoned by the FWP, would be humorous if the anticipated
results were not so tragic. The authorities suggest that
Montana's hunters be allowed to shoot, calling such a
shooting "fair chase," 25 bison this coming
spring. This is supposed to provide a solution to the
overgrazing and potential contamination of our livestock
industry by brucellosis by the Yellowstone bison herds;
that the herd from Yellowstone currently numbers over
4,000 head seems to have escaped the attention of those
empowered with the solution of the buffalo problem. To
ask the America that lives outside Montana's borders to
believe that the "harvest'' of .04 percent of the
Yellowstone bison herds is going to solve any problems,
real or imagined, inherent in bison management is ludicrous.
The PETA people and their numerous allies have the determination
and the financial capacity to damage our tourism industry
in a big way. Before those Montanans dependent upon tourism
for their daily bread are made to bear the brunt of this
fiasco, the state's sportsmen should demand this hunt
be stopped.
