Letter
to the Editor: Control oriented cruelty of bison hazing
must stop

Thank
you, Tim Stevens, for offering the public a straight forward,
truthful, view of where the Yellowstone Buffalo issues
stand.
Brucellosis transmission is an "already
highly unlikely event." If brucellosis were really
the main problem, cattle would need to be kept in sterile
cells to avoid potential transmission from any animal.
The real issue, is the fear of "the unfair current
policy of penalizing cattle producers across the state"
should one cow test positive for brucellosis. This is
a political problem that has unjustly targeted bison far
too long.
You clarify that "bison leave
the park because the snow in Yellowstone is too deep for
them to be able to reach their foodgrasses.", and
they, "will roam regardless of whether there are
300 or 3,000 bison in the park." This shows
that Montana's current slaughter practice is a cruel and
senseless, quick-fix to get through the migration season,
never a solution. The bison hunt would at least give
buffalo the higher trophy-animal status that elk
receive. To some it would justify their right to migrate,
for even a mile or two more from their current boundaries.
The immediate issue at hand, however,
is the annual migration of pregnant bison to native
birthing grounds, that is happening now, as is, the mounting
up of Department of Livestock appointed bullies on horses,
four wheelers, trucks and helicopters, to haze these full-term
females back into the park. The bison are brutally
run through forests and into guard rails causing them
to abort or become separated from their newborn calves.
While we wait for officials to bless
the bison with a little more space, this horrific
hazing will again take place. Thank you again, Tim, for
showing us that this control-oriented cruelty has never
been necessary. It must be stopped right now.
